The Next IT generation....Oh yeah!

September 26, 2012
So. We get our classmates computers. Whoohoo! Um hold up...I have get them all up and running   by    my    self ! Okay so I didn't technically have to set them up myself but if I wanted to use them as soon I got them in my hot little hands (of course!) then I had to do it alone...or did I?  Call me crazy but I figured, I had thirteen eagar boys and girls who could set the computers up if I showed them how. That's right, my fresh off the first grade hall second graders set up those computers! They created files, named them and saved stuff in them. They picked out a screen saver, They adjusted the time and they changes all the preferences. They named each computer and  AND set two webpages to be their homepages when they click on the internet. I am very happy teacher! Tomorrow we download Java...oh and finish our autobiography, planet research and nouns flip book. If only we had an app to give us more time in the school day.

Is there an app for that?

I have found during the last few months that although I am not a technology native, I can do pretty well with a manual in my lap. I can remember using a rotary phone and even telling the operator the number I needed to be connected to when I lived near Woodland, Georgia when I was a child. I am in my late thirties. I remember our first microwave. I remember having to get up and turn the channel on the console T.V. when the news came on at six for my father.  Technology has transformed eve...

On with the show...

August 29, 2012
Have I told you these kids are awesome? Wow! We have learned how to complete our calendar math page in our math journal. We are three stories into our reading books and we know that stories have characters, a setting and a problem to be solved. Our writing now includes paragraph form as well as having a beginning, middle and end to the stories we write. This week we are continuing to study matter by making apple sauce to observe a change in matter that is created when we apply heat to the sol...

Break on through to the other side....Yeah

August 25, 2012
Please pardon my Doors reference. I couldn't resist. This was the magical week when second graders leave first grade behind and begin to work towards independence. We worked on following directions quickly and raise your hand to speak more than anything else. These simple rules are part of the big five from Whole Brain Teaching.
The first day of school my students learned Class! Yes!  I looove the effectiveness of this attention getter.   I can whisper, "Class" and my students will whis...

Monday, Monday...

August 14, 2012
The first Monday of this school year is over. Me, I am celebrating this milestone by watching Whole Brain Teaching videos!!!!
I bet your son or daughter has already told you things are different in Mrs. Hehman's class. Today we learned our vocabulary with Teach-Okay and Mirror and Words. It was awesome! These kids were all smiles and giggles as they learned. I started using Whole Brain Teaching last year little bits at a time but I  found that it was so fun and so powerful that I wanted to jum...

Jedi Masters

May 27, 2012
The last big moment of my class this year was the Jedi Masters Knighting Ceremony. Yes, we did the school awards but I wanted my crew members to know that I noticed how well they hula hooped, danced, read for the love of reading, wrote for the love of writing and sprawled out in every direction in an effort to be comfortable in those dear little brown chairs all day long. A more like family friend, who has been all manner of characters for my boys at their birthday parties, dressed in a brown...

Wait...Wait I never even saw Arthur Christmas.

March 7, 2012
Some days ago, it dawned on me that Christmas is over and um, come to think of it, Valentine's Day has come and gone too. You'd think I would note these passages seeing how I teach calendar skills but I just kept thinking I had time. Now I am thinking, I had time back in January. I even had time in February. Now it is nearly Spring Break and my darling second graders are showing the unmistakable signs of becoming third graders. They don't ask me what time it is anymore. They can tell time for...

Greetings Earthlings!

January 26, 2012

Greetings Earthling! (that's you)

What a crazy last few months! The first nine weeks is over and we are well on our way into the holiday season.  The Pumpkin Patch Invaders of the Math Kind was an amazing time. Mrs. Parmer taught us about fractions, turns out they are as easy as pumpkin pie. Mrs. McCrory taught us about prior knowledge using a gigantic pumpkin donated by the Tate family. Mrs. Renolds taught us that our different estimates while stuffing scarecrow hands were because of our non...
